He walked slowly through the pocket of rainforest, enjoying the ferns, vines and old trees. All around the light rain tapped gently on the leaves. He came to a log across the path that was at an inconvenient height – too high to step over and too low to duck under. He took a clumsy stride onto it and straddled it awkwardly before pulling over his other leg. He stood on the other side and saw the log was wrapped in a thick, strong vine that had knotted itself permanently around the wood. He wondered if the vine’s embrace was the reason the tree had fallen.
