He walked out onto a short jetty, looking down at the calm, opaque river water. A pair of black swans was swimming nearby, slowly drifting away from the shore. They took turns dipping their heads in the cold, blue water to search for food. They appeared to be partners in life and when one was underwater and blind to what was above, the other would keep watch. He admired how their feather were smooth at the front of their bodies and rippled like flower petals towards the back.
